History of Chinese Brush Painting From its origins in Chinese calligraphy, Chinese brush painting began over 3,000 years ago. Symbols, or pictures of an object, such as a horse evolved into the character for "horse" when a written language was formed. Traditionally painters learn the "Four Gentleman" of bamboo, plum blossom, wild orchid and chrysanthemum in beginning classes. Humans' relationship to nature is revealed in landscapes, where figures are small and mountains vast. |
